Privacy policy

This site is a reference publication, and it is built so that reading it does not require you to hand over anything. This page sets out what is collected, what is not, and what happens to the small amount of technical information that any web request necessarily carries.

The short version

There is no account to create, no newsletter to join and no form to fill in. The site sets no cookies of its own, runs no analytics, serves no advertising and embeds no third-party tracking scripts. It does not build a profile of you, does not sell data about you, and has no database in which to store either. The only personal information the site ever receives is what you choose to put in an email to the publisher.

What is collected

Two things, and neither of them identifies you.

Standard server request data

Like any website, serving a page requires the server to receive the request. That request carries the page you asked for, the time of the request, your browser's user-agent string and your IP address. This is technical data that the network needs in order to return the page, not information the site asks you for. It is used to serve the request and to keep the service running, and it is not combined with anything else to identify a reader.

What you send by email

If you write to the publisher, that message and your email address arrive in an ordinary mailbox. They are kept so the conversation can be answered and so a correction can be followed up, and for no other purpose. They are not added to a mailing list, not shared with anyone, and not used to contact you about anything you did not write about.

What is not collected

The list matters more than the summary, so it is set out in full.

  • No analytics

    There is no Google Analytics, no Plausible, no Fathom and no equivalent. The site does not count visits, measure session length, record which pages you read or track where you came from.

  • No advertising or trackers

    There are no ad networks, no retargeting pixels, no social media embeds and no third-party scripts of any kind. Nothing on a page here reports your visit to another company.

  • No cookies

    The site sets no cookies of its own, and there is no cookie banner because there is nothing to consent to. Your browser may store a page in its cache, which is a local function of the browser and not something the site can read.

  • No accounts or profiles

    There is no sign-up, no login and no user profile. The site has no way to recognise you between visits, and no interest in doing so.

  • No location or device fingerprinting

    The site does not attempt to determine your location, does not read device identifiers, and does not combine technical signals to build a fingerprint that could follow you.

  • No sale or sharing of data

    Nothing collected is sold, rented, traded or shared with third parties for any purpose, including marketing. There is no data broker relationship and no advertising partner to share it with.

Live market data

Some pages show a current BTC/USD price and a recent daily candle series. Those figures are fetched by the site's own backend from the Coinbase Exchange public API and cached for a few minutes before being served to your browser. The request goes from the site's backend to Coinbase, not from your browser, so Coinbase does not see your visit and no third-party script runs on the page.

The consequence is that the live figures are a reading rather than a record. They are cached, they may lag the market by a few minutes, and they change between visits. The data sources and methodology page explains how the live series differs from the curated historical tables.

Your choices and rights

Because the site collects no personal data beyond what you send by email, there is very little to request, correct or delete. If you have written to the publisher and would like that correspondence removed, ask and it will be deleted. There is no other record of you to act on.

You do not need to do anything to avoid being tracked here, because you are not being tracked. Blocking scripts, refusing cookies or using a privacy-focused browser will not change how the site works for you, and no part of it is gated behind accepting anything.

Changes to this policy

If the site ever begins collecting something it does not collect today, this page will say so before that change takes effect, and it will say what is being collected and why. A privacy policy that quietly widens its scope is worse than no policy at all, so any change here will be described rather than slipped in.
